When Wire EDM Is Useful
Wire EDM uses a thin electrically charged wire to remove material from
an electrically conductive workpiece. It is useful for certain detailed
profiles, narrow features and geometries that can be difficult to
produce efficiently with conventional cutting tools.
Because material is removed through electrical discharge rather than a
conventional cutting edge, Wire EDM can be especially useful for some
intricate features and conductive materials.
Types of Wire EDM Work
- Detailed profiles and contours
- Narrow slots and intricate features
- Tooling components
- Precision cutouts
- Complex internal and external profiles
- Parts combining EDM with milling or turning
What to Send for a Wire EDM Quote
Send the drawing or CAD file, material, stock thickness, quantity,
tolerances, finish requirements and any important datum, inspection or
documentation information.
Wire EDM FAQ
Does the material need to conduct electricity?
Yes. Wire EDM requires an electrically conductive workpiece.
Can Wire EDM be combined with CNC milling?
Yes. Some parts use conventional machining for part of the geometry and
EDM for features that benefit from the process.
Should I send both a drawing and a CAD model?
When available, both are useful. The model communicates geometry while
the drawing may contain tolerances, finish requirements and notes.
Can I submit the RFQ online?
Yes. Drawings and CAD files can be uploaded through Anco Precision's
online quote form for review.
